on merely expressive devices
Abstract: By a “merely expressive device”I mean a linguistic expression that (i) helps us to express thoughts but (ii) does not contribute to the truth conditions of the thoughts thus expressed. I will enumerate a variety of such merely expressive devices, show for some of them how their property of being merely expressive can be reconstructed model-theoretically, and indicate why they are important philosophically.
